A material thing opens.
I am excited. I am nervous. I can’t tell.
Lots of my friends have come with their kids.
There is a kind of tension in the objects and throughout the space that has passed through to the parents.
I am expecting for something to be ruined. It is the vulnerability of these objects that for me makes them beautiful. But I also feel anxious. I decide not to stand in the room. Maybe it is my own tension that is being transmitted?
One of the works is an inflated balloon. Baxter (age 4) is playing with it. He asks his mum if he can have it.
“Er..I think it might be part of the work” She is unsure. “You will have to ask the Booby” (that’s me).
He asks me if it is part of the work or can he have it. Now I am unsure. It is part of the work and I had not anticipated this response. Luckily I have more balloons.
"It is part of the work but you may play with it and when you’re finished you can leave it in the gallery and come a pick a balloon of any colour to take home”
It is not long until the balloon pops. People jump. I give Baxter another balloon. Now there are lots of children. They all want a balloon. Balloons are everywhere.
More notes.
-There are lots of children. They are bored. I lay down sheets of paper and some felt tip pens. Soon they are all on the floor drawing. The adults enjoy a momentary reprieve.
-Somebody flicks some of the hundreds and thousands out of their bag.
-Somebody else apparently stole some.
-A man is blowing on the castle of dust, just to see if it is actually dust.
